Anyone had luck with making custom sur files for planets using custom made 3db files?

I've actually sorted this problem now. You need a sur file on them otherwise the textures won't show up properly in game. You also need to have the sur file with phantom physics on as remember its the death zone on the planet that kills you, not the sur file.

ye mine aint moded i have 2 probs the death zone is prity weak and the npcs fly through the planets dunno why here some code [Object] nickname = LI07_planet_1 ids_name = 655363 spin = 0.000000, 0.050000, 0.000000 rotate = 0, 0, 0 pos = 315, 0, 40393 archetype = planet_gasgrncld_3000 atmosphere_range = 3500 burn_color = 0, 255, 255 ids_info = 688129 ring = Zone_LI07_planet_1_ring, solar\rings\ew05_ring.ini base = LI07_01_Base reputation = fc_c_grp
[zone] nickname = LI07_planet_1_death pos = 315, 0, 40393 shape = SPHERE size = 3400 damage = 5000 <----------- i need to up that that sort = 99.500000 density = 0 relief_time = 0
but for the npcs flying through them dunno why

Yes i agree, the death zone is very weak, stick it up to 1 million or higher, will vapourize anything that collides with it then.
As to the ships flying through, do you have an encounter near the planet? If ships are hitting the atmosphere and going into the planet, could simply be they are not getting destroyed when they hit the death zone, why it needs to be really high. This would give the impression they are flying through the planet.

Well, I have made custom planets with working death zones and sure, however, the problem I have is the distances are off.
The planets I made cmp files. Basic textured spheres and resized a existing sur for the planet. It works, but states you are 0K away when you are still about 3K away.
I tested them and the sures are correct as you can bounce off the planet surface when death zone is turned off.
I just need to figure out the distance issue.

I use custom 3db files with sur files and all is sweet. I don't know why but when i tried using cmp files, i could never get the damn textures to show up.

With your custom sur files for your planets, how did you get the distances to show up and work correctly?
Would it be possible to get a copy of one of your sur files so I could compare it to one of mine?
Also, for CMPs for planets, I you have to use UTF editor and add some lines to them for them to work. I can post this when I get home tonight.

fadius check your SUR type, chances are your using type4 which is for ships/stations, change it with FlModelTool to either a type2 (scenery) or type3 (equip, damage etc)

@ fadius
The distance thing is something i've never suffered from so its a problem i haven't had to fix lol. Follow Bejays advice because i suspect that's the issue as well. Any code regarding the cmp files i'd like to see as well if you don't mind, just to see where i was going wrong

I will look at that in the sur files I am using. Gibbon, as far as code, you mean what is in UTF correct? There is nothing else I do with sur besides ensure it has the same name as the cmp.

Actually i was on about the solararch entries, i mean i define the planet with a cmp file and a mat file and other relevant planet information but the textures refuse to show up. I do the same with a 3db file and it all works, no logic to it at all lol

Is there a chance I can get a sur of one of your planets to look at and maybe copy for use with what I am doing?
I have tried all sur types and my distance issue still resides. I can swap you one of my working cmp files for you to look at.
