Well here's another project that i never thought would see the light of day, a new Chris Roberts game. For those who don't know, he made various popular games including Privateer, Wing Commander (including the god awful movie), Starlancer, and my personal favourite, Freelancer. Crowd funded by Kickstarter, due for release sometime in late 2014, this hopefully will match the Hollywood style hype surrounding it. Slick videos and great marketing, let's hope the end product justifies my funding. Details here: robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/

Have not committed any funding so far, but since it will be available to backers in increments earlier than 2014, may reconsider. If anything gets close to FL2, I suppose this is the one.

Time will tell really, CR has a big vision and ego to match, he was the same with FL and Microsoft took it off him and gave us a watered down version of his vision. I just hope that after all the hype and slick videos, that we actually get a good game. As long as it has playability and depth and not too much grinding, it will work. The micro payments in game are standard fare these days in any mmo, so players really need to move past this concept and simply accept it. I've funded it, and await the beta with many others, just not holding my breath

Hey Gibbon, I have the same hopes, but this may just be what we have all been hoping and trying to get. I may be FreeLancer 2 (On Steroids). I have been through most of the Roberts Space Industries site and it looks very promicing. There is even a ship called The Freelancer. The ships in the game (from description) appear to be engineered. Things fail with damage. I hope to play it, but I don't know if I can afford a ne computer by then. Otherwise, looks good. Pascal

As with any Chris Roberts game, the issue will be time. Can he release it on time? He's always late, which is his big problem. The fact he has our money (mine included) should spur him on to release it close to his original date

I pledged for the RSI Aurora - LTI. My favorite of the CR games was Privateer. Mainly because I could use a joystick to play it. The two big flaws with FL to me was the lack of support for a joystick and the lack of multiple ship ownership. The big things that intrest me in SC is the planned relase of a server package for our own mods, joystick and Oculus Rift support, a hangar full of ships, the ability to form boarding parties and take over a ship, and the lack of outside investors. I've been following it closely for a few months now and I'm still excited about it. Honestly, I still love FL and if it had joystick support and fleet support I would still be all in.

And I have to admit that the thought of getting to explore my ships in first person makes me tingle in a good way.

There are some other big differences with SC than there were with his other projects. Because SC is being built in an existing engine, they aren't having to build from scratch. Plus the release of modules and continued patches I think changes the way we traditionally think of computer games as a consumer. It will be interesting to see how well it goes when the first big bugs are ironed out in a very public forum. It will test their resolve because there is no way you can make 200,000 people agree on how the game should be designed. Could be genius or it could be a total disaster.

They have hit over $30 million worth of funding now, which to say the least is impressive.

You will have to have a really good system to play it though.
I keep up with it's development, though haven't committed any funds yet. I was in the first group to sign in on it, though don't really know what the Golden Ticket is going to be good for in the end.
Do want to play the SP player version before jumping in to MP

Hi all, resident forum lurker here. To call this game an ambitious undertaking would be putting it mildly. They have game "packages" ranging in price from $45 USD to a whopping(!!) $15,000 USD. Not to mention additional ships you can pay cash for and subscriptions. They also have a shop for even more add-ons paid for using the in-game monetary system. What I can't tell is what phase the game is in. My guess - based on what I can glean from the forums - is that is in the Early Access/Beta phase. At any rate it looks pretty sweet. Gonna need a pretty beefy system to play though. -DJ

I'd go with early alpha tbh. I have played the Arena Commander release so far, graphically very good, sense of scale is amazing, but they will have to do a lot of graphic optimization before it's really useable. Elite Dangerous did the same thing with really high level textures to start with before changing them later on to make things move more easily. Looking forward to SC, but it will be a while yet before we see anything really meaningful.
